What happened on May 31, 2026
Many Long Island businesses still keep their books in QuickBooks Desktop. But Intuit has been phasing it out for small businesses. QuickBooks Desktop 2023 was discontinued after May 31, 2026, and discontinued versions lose Desktop Payroll, online bank feeds, payment processing, live support and critical security updates (Intuit).
What’s next on the calendar
QuickBooks Desktop 2022 was discontinued in May 2025, and Desktop 2024 is scheduled to follow after May 31, 2027. Intuit also stopped selling new Desktop Pro Plus and Premier Plus subscriptions to U.S. customers on September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers can renew, but Desktop Enterprise is the only edition still sold to new customers (NumeraWise).
The software still opens, but it’s running without bank feeds, payroll updates or security patches.

Your three options
First, check your version: open QuickBooks and press F2 (or Ctrl+1). The Product Information window shows your version and year. Then choose your next step.
1. Move to QuickBooks Online
Cloud access from anywhere, automatic updates and bank feeds. It’s the best fit for most small businesses, but some reports and inventory features work differently, so plan time to adjust.
2. Upgrade to a supported Desktop version
Renewing a Plus subscription or moving to Enterprise keeps your current workflow. If you’re on Pro or Premier, it’s a short-term fix.
3. Switch to different software
Worth considering if your industry needs features QuickBooks doesn’t cover well.
